What exactly is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is no longer just for the movie stars and the super rich. More and more people are realizing these days that your teeth and your smile are your calling card and as nice as we like to think we are about other people we do judge people by their looks and especially about their smile.
Cosmetic dentistry takes on many forms from minor modifications to major modifications but is essentially about the enhancement of a person’s smile and through making minor or major modifications to their teeth. For a cosmetic dentist to do a great job it means that they have to have any eye for detail as well as a full understanding of the dental anatomy coupled with a sound knowledge of dental materials and when to use them. A dentist must be able to understand a patient’s needs and to be able to create a realistic idea of what is possible. They must be able to communicate their vision to a lab technician and be a key artist in creating the smile makeover for the patient . Cosmetic dentistry has not be recognized as an actual designated specialty in the dental profession, however the process of becoming a cosmetic dentist may take years of extra study, maybe a mentor and additional training in order to be able to have the confidence and skill to perform complicated and time consuming procedures.
So what exactly is a cosmetic dentist?
A cosmetic dentist focuses entirely on the appearance and esthetics of a person’s smile. Dentistry for a cosmetic dentist is an art form as well as a science and their use of dental materials and when to use them is very important in creating the smiles that they achieve. Most cosmetic dentists are normally affiliated with external organizations that will give them levels of accreditation in cosmetic dentistry.
Is there a difference between a cosmetic dentist and a restorative dentist?
Although there is some overlap in these two fields of dentistry the focus of work for a cosmetic dentist is completely different. They also have varying levels of expertise. A restorative dentist may be concerned with the prevention and treatment of all oral diseases as well as diagnosing them in the first place. The dentist will implement a treatment plan based on his findings and will restore teeth that are cracked, chipped, decayed, discolored or missing. If any persons teeth have been affected by any of these dental issues then he will attend to them, restoring them to their proper function.
A cosmetic dentist is more concerned with the appearance and while he may have to implement some restorative procedures his focus once he has done that is in terms of finesse and style and making sure that everything looks natural as well as functional. Cosmetic dentists pay a lot of attention to detail. If somebodies teeth look absolutely perfect the chances are that they have been to a cosmetic dentist.
What happens during a cosmetic dentist consultation.?
Many patients may bring photos cut from magazines or printed from the computer in order to convey to the dentist what exactly they are looking for. Some patients may bring photos of what their teeth looked like in the past. Sometimes patients have missing or discolored teeth and they obviously are uncomfortable about the way they look - this may be an indication of underlying dental issues. The dentist will first ascertain the dental health of the patient by taking a dental exam. Once the dentist has taken care of any underlying issues such as decay or root canals then they then focus on the esthetic issues. Then once the dentist has a full understanding of the overall cosmetic procedures that you would like to achieve they will implement a treatment regimen and will then tell you how long and the treatment will take and how long it will cost.
What are all the cosmetic dental treatments that are available?
Cosmetic dentistry treatments can improve the esthetic look of a patient’s teeth and can restore function in order to improve oral health. At Right Family Dental P.C. Dr. David Pinkhasov provides the following cosmetic procedures:
Teeth whitening : Dentists use teeth whitening to restore the whiteness to a patient’s smile often before they give them crowns or implants. Then they match the color of their whitened teeth to the color of the implants.
Porcelain crowns: Porcelain crowns are used to change a person’s smile by placing the crown or cap onto a broken tooth. The crowns can be made to match the color of existing teeth and are a not noticeable that they are actually made from porcelain - they look just like real teeth.
Porcelain veneers : porcelain veneers are small wafer thin pieces of ceramic material that are almost translucent are placed exactly over a patient’s teeth giving them a perfect smile. They can be used to cover broken or chipped teeth or teeth that have stains.
Dental implants : dental implants placed titanium metal roots into a person’s jawbone that become fixed and permanent due to the process of osseo -integration. Once they are fully attached to the bone a prosthetic crown is placed onto the metal abutment giving an implanted tooth that looks and functions like a real tooth.
Invisalign: Invisalign uses a series of aligners that the patient receives every two weeks. The aligners are shaped using CAD and will gradually change the patient’s position over time, with the patient changing the aligners every two weeks. Eventually the teeth reach their optimum position and are kept their for a short while using retainers. Cosmetic fillings: many dentists now don’t use amalgalm fillings and use composite white fillings instead removing the possibility of toxicity from amalgalm fillings.
Gum contouring: Gum contouring shapes the gums of patients that have uneven gums or too much gums covering their teeth. There are many reasons for this ranging from genetic to the use of prescription medications. Many patients without even gums find it difficult to find the confidence to smile. Highly technical equipment is used for gum reshaping. Periodontal gum shaping is performed for therapeutic and medical purposes.

LEARN HOW DENTAL IMPLANTS CAN RESTORE YOUR SMILE - GIVING YOU RENEWED CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF AND GIVING YOU BACK THE FUNCTION OF YOUR TEETH BEFORE YOU LOST THEM.
Dental implant surgery is by far the biggest advancement in modern dentistry today that allows patients who have experienced tooth loss to have full functioning and aesthetically natural looking teeth.
Dental implants have now become the modern method of replacing missing teeth almost to the point where the mere thought of a dental bridge seems like a very bad idea.
Traditionally bridges were used extensively but now after almost 45 years research and a near 95% success rate overall, dental implants can give back patients their missing teeth offering comfort, stability and longevity. Options that were used once before such as bridges and dentures give many patients problems with stability, movement, comfort and can have terrible effects on a patients ability to eat and negatively impacts their nutritional uptake.
At Right Family Dental if you are replacing single or multiple teeth, or helping to stabilize an existing denture or replace one, the possibilities that dental implants can create are endless.
There are many benefits to getting dental implant if you are missing some or many teeth.
Here are the main benefits:
1) You are actually restoring your mouth to it's natural state. When you replace the entire root including your tooth you are really replicating the actual function of your natural teeth. This will create a strong and very stable foundation that will allow you to be able to bite comfortably and chew with ease. Your teeth will look absolutely natural to anyone looking at them.
2) Your facial structure is preserved due to the fact the implants prevent bone resorption. When you lose teeth you also lose bone and in many instances it can be 25% across the ridge where the tooth was removed during the first year. When a patient loses all of their teeth their is a lot of bone loss and you can lose one third of your facial structure as there is nothing to preserve the bone.
3) Any neighboring teeth that you have where you have missing teeth become compromised. Therefore tooth replacement using dental crowns that are supported by implants or bridges do not involve the adjacent natural teeth being affected, as there is no need for them to be grinded down, compromised or damaged.
Conversely when teeth are replaced using bridges this means that teeth have to be grinded down in order for the bridge to be cemented onto them. This damaging and compromising of neighboring teeth is no longer neccessary with dental implants.
4) With partial dentures you have clasps which hook onto your natural teeth. These can move back and forth and eventually a patients teeth can loosen due to this. Obviously with dental implants you will not have this problem.
5) Your smile will be improved greatly now that you have natural looking replacement teeth. If you have only one tooth missing then you are better to have a single dental implant rather than a traditional implant supported bridge. This does not support the underlying bone and means that you have to damage neighboring teeth by grinding them down. If you have a missing tooth in the front of your mouth then a replacement dental implant tooth will create a natural appearance.
6) You will have greatly improved your oral hygiene now that you have had placed an implant supported crown - that of course you can clean just like a natural tooth. When you have a tooth supported bridge it is difficult to clean. Cleaning implant supported teeth is far easier than cleaning a denture.
7) You can actually reduce wrinkling around your mouth due to the fact that the dental implants preserve the bone and will prevent the loss of facial structure. The possibility of Posterior bite collapse has been greatly reduced.
8) You have improved appearance. Since implants preserve bone, preventing deterioration of the facial structures, your appearance is improved. Collapse of the lower one-third of the face caused by complete tooth loss can be visually corrected and the remaining bone preserved. The appearance of wrinkles around the mouth caused by posterior bite collapse, or complete facial structure collapse is virtually eliminated.
9) Many patients report a feeling of renewed self confidence now that they can do things that they were not able to do before. The report a feeling of better self esteem and the ability to smile confidently now that they are less self-conscious and have better comfort health and function from their new teeth.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT PROCESS FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Initial Consultation with Dr. Pinkhasov
At your initial consultation with Dr. Pinkhasov he will examine your missing teeth and make a decision as to whether you are a candidate for dental implants. This will involve taking a 3D scan and also impressions of your teeth that will allow the doctor to create an initial treatment plan for your case.
During your examination with Dr. Pinkhasov he will evaluate areas of your mouth where teeth are missing and will make a decision as to whether you have enough bone available for dental implants as well as making a note of the density. If you need a gum graft then Dr Pinkhasov will arrange for you to be referred to an oral surgeon that will perform the gum graft.
Placing of a Traditional Dental Implant
During the dental implant procedure the dental implants are placed into the bone using a surgical procedure and some anesthesia. After the dental implant procedure the dental implants are left undisturbed for about 8 weeks while the process of osseo-integration takes place and the implant becomes permanently bonded and fixed to the patients jaw.
During this phase where the implant is bonding to the bone Dr. Pinkhasov will first fit you with a temporary replacement tooth - therefore you will never be without a tooth.
Procedure to attach the abutment
During the period where the bone is forming round the dental implant, Dr Pinkhasov will fit a small connector post called an abutment to each dental implant. On top of this will be where the crown(permanent) replacement tooth will be placed. In the meantime this connector post called the abutment will be placed and will stay here until you are ready for the permanent crown.
Fabrication of crown - Prosthetic tooth
Dr Pinkhasov will take an impression of your teeth and the implant abutments, he will then note the shade of your teeth so as to make the shade of your replacement teeth the same. He will also take note of your bite registrations. He will use a dental lab technician that will fabricate your prosthetic crown that will be palced onto the abutment. This can sometimes take some time if you are receiving more than one implant.
Once they are ready Dr. Pinkhasov will place the prosthetic crowns on top of the abutments. He will make sure that you can close your mouth properly and that they fit and look natural. He will also take an impression of your bite registration. You are now ready for eating and chewing and to do all the things you did before you lost your teeth.
Whatever your dental needs, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our cosmetic dentist to see how we can help you achieve optimal dental health and make a beautiful first impression.
